The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov. One of the main characters is a cat who is part of the entourage of a "magician" who wreaks havoc in Moscow. The novel was banned for 40 years in the Soviet Union because it was an allegorical critique of the direction government and society were taking.

Author Elaine Viets - current mysteries series are Dead End Job and Mystery Shopper. Elaine was a columnist for the St. Louis Post Dispatch, and is very witty. Not the best literature, but Mom has a soft spot.
