As we all know, CK is her own ghetto cat, so one never knows how the wind blows. However, Parker is trying to figure out what jacket will impress her. Normally he is a furist, but it has been pretty cold lately. So, we will take votes on the best jacket for the Handsome Mancat
to wear for Miss Wild CK!

Here is Mr. Parker so you can have a visual to compare:
So, here are the questions from the cat contigent known as KruseKats.

Why is the Neko Fly shut up in a closet? And why is it on top of a bunch of quilts that fall on us?

Why are the Greenies Smartbites in the pantry where Parker can't get to them?

Why do you let other cats besides Maggie sit on your lap?

Why don't you have litter boxes in almost every room so we don't have to walk downstairs?

Why do you have to brush our tails?

Why do you let Parker enjoy your tilapia? He gets fish breath.

Why do you have to have water running in the shower? It is a perfect DRY hideout for Ken.

Maggie and Parker

So, here is Mom with her attempt to address our concerns:

Neko flies are great toys, but you only would pay attention to it in brief encounters. (Oh, like right! Let me pull the legs off those suckers, and I will STILL chase them!) They are kept on top of quilts to deter cat marauders. (Well, that is just wrong!)

Parker needs to keep his figure if he expects to take CK to the Valentine's dance. (OK, you win that one.)

My lap is equal opportunity despite birthright. (boy, you are a real pain in the arse, mom!)

I happen to get asthma attacks from litter dust, so that is why they are in the basement. (You ailment isn't a concern for us. Man up, woman!)

I brush your tails because you have such long fur. Brushing restores them to a gorgeous plume-like state. (I guess you have us on that one. We do like to look good.)

Parker likes tilapia, and other than that I have no good excuse. He probably is my last red cat, and I do spoil him a bit. (AHA! I knew it! He's your favorite. NOT FAIR!)

Showers are like cat tongues. Ken hangs out in lots of strange places, so the shower is not on my list of things to worry about. (I have to admit the Wegie is strange, so I will let you slide on that one mom.)

Well, we won on many points. I hope she does somethign about this inequality thing. Thanks CK for bringing our concerns to light!
She says as stuff sells, she donates profits to Maine Coon Rescue. Recent activities for MC Rescue include recovery, veternary care, and fostering for cats from hoarding situations. Mom plans to add totes and bags, maybe even small quilts, but hasn't dug out the sewing machine yet. In the meantime, I am posting some of her jewelry.

Please visit our store for purchases, and thanks from all of us Maine Coons for helping!
Cicadas are the topic of this season! Eastern areas of the United States are hosts to the 17 year Brood II. I thought it might be interesting to look up some facts about the loud insects.

The uppermost topic on all anipals’ minds is: “Can I eat these things and not get sick?” The short answer is YES!!!! What a relief since those cicadas are really noisy and irritating, a trial for cats and dogs. I say, give the AMA a high paw for telling our worried humans it’s fine if we indulge. The AMA does recommend that humans watch how many we ingest since the wings and legs can irritate our throat and maybe a sensitive tummy. (medicalnewstoday) Cicadas don’t bite or sting, so we are safe against that type of injury.

The current crop of Cicadas is a periodical brood known as Magicicada which emerges every 13 or 17 years. These are the reddish ones with red eyes. Cicadas appearing together maintain their populations without predators reducing their populations.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tibicen

There are other cicadas known as Dog Days or Tibicen since they come out every 1-5 years. This guy is a greenish, large species (thinks to self, I bet those are really satisfying crunchies).

Cicadas have in interesting life cycle where they spend most of their life as a nymph underground. When Nature signals “it’s time”, nymphs burrow out of the ground and find a plant to crawl onto so they can molt. Once they have molted, the whitish exoskeleton darkens and hardens. Once the exoskeletons have hardened, adult mating behaviors begin.(insects.University of Michigan)

The males start singing to attract females and fly short distances to find the lady. Once mated, females cut lines in young tree branches to deposit her eggs which may number up to 600. After 6 to ten weeks, eggs hatch, the nymphs drop to the ground and burrow to find a root for food source. The life cycle repeats.

I would like to clear up a misconception that locusts are the same insect as cicadas. They are classified differently and their scientific names show that they are from different families.

For all those humans who have been worrying about us anipals eating cicadas, you should know that they are a very good protein source. Look for the nymphs and females for the best eating. There are hundreds of recipes such as candied cicadas. Yum! 2 years ago when eastern Missouri had their 13 year Brood, an enterprising ice cream store owner in Columbia decided to cash in on this protein source. He coated the cicadas in sugar and chocolate, adding them to 1 batch of ice cream. The ice cream was doing a brisk business until the city health department suggested that it might be against regulations.
We all got together and decided that we would like to blog about science related stuff. I have experience with science articles, and the boys seem eager to learn about creepy boy things. That Ken investigates lots of things with 2+ legs.

So, look for a blog post about cicadas coming soon!
I didn't go to blogpaws as a flat pet this year, but Stuffed Parker watched everything from Mom's backpack. Once he flew out of the backpack, and she left him in the litterbox. Luckily she remembered, and found him just shaking off his back paws.

Mom and Parker learned meditation and did yoga with CheshireK's Robin. Parker didn't see what the big deal is about yoga - he stretches like that all the time. Said they did a pose called Gate. Well he does that everytime he licks his you know.

We are such simple bloggers that some sessions about marketing really don't appeal to Mom who is an introverts so selling yourself is a foreign concept. Rescues, proper reporting skills, etc. are our milleu. Steve Dale was phenomenal and then Dr. Bisha reinforced his idea.

Their highlight was honor flags. Stuffed Parker proved his worth. He was the security cat for folks who got emotional making their flags. Lots of lovely participation. And, lots of great response.

I got my own quilt this year! It is hand appliqued based on Rose of Sharon patterns. Mom learned a different technique in each block. For example, the center 2nd block from the top has a ruched rose. The big pink one to your right has reverse applique. The bottom center is made from one 10 x 10" piece of green cloth and cut as the applique progressed. The big one to your right has folded 3D rose buds.

This is just the top and the corners were in progress. Mom put leaves and buds on the stems. It was hand quilted by the Concordia Luthern ladies in Kirkwood, MO. It isn't bound yet, but Dad wants to submit it to the UCity show this fall.

I haven't told you the name - "Maggie, there is no such thing as applique police". Dad didn't get it for a long time. Mom says that you can make a mistake but only she and an uptight judge will know it. So, she doesn't care if the "quilt police" look. She loves it, and so do I!.Kruse Katshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14950732079927266134noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4250397341827268804.post-62275066950748888952013-03-12T03:30:00.000-07:002013-03-12T03:30:02.384-07:00KruseKats Quilt! Buster's StarOne part of quilt making that is rarely talked about is establishing provenance. It is essential to have the maker and date on a quilt otherwise you have to rely on oral history which can get murky. We have 3 incredible family quilts, but all we know is that they date to the Civil War. Most quilters today go the extra step and name the quilt to help establish what part of their life the quilt is celebrating such as a birth or the life of a dearly departed.

Mom and Dad have been naming quilts for us anipals for years. This is named for Buster, a red ticked tabby. Mom says he is the gold standard for all cats, thus "Buster's Star". (What am I? chopped liver?) It was juried into the University City, MO show last year. She didn't win anything and never figured on it, just likes folks to see her stuff. The pattern is called Pennsylvania Star. the star and appliques are batiks, the background is a print, and the border is one of Mom's hand dyed.Dad did a really cool piping between the border and binding. enjoy!
Dad's TurnWe took the weekend off to help heal mom's neck/shoulder. She's doing PT, hoping to avoid surgery.

Dad has been making quilts for the lady in his car pool. Her son who had beenin and out of reb finally OD'ed. The whole family feels the loss keenly, and asked Dad to make quilts using his favorite shirts. this is an outstanding version utilizing a string piecing method using strips of the shirts and other fabrics. I hink it is absolute eye candy!

I wasn't allowed on the quilt, but if you look in your lower right hand corner, the dog was involved.
Lydia's HouseMom has very strong thoughts about domestic abuse, and volunteered for an interesting organization which provides intermediate housing and life skills training called Lydia's House. She made this quilt for a fund raiser auction. It was appraised for $500 and auctioned for $550.

The quilt is from a Piece O'Cake design published in Better Homes and Gardens quilt magazine many years ago. The houses are all hand appliqueed while the motto in border is machine appliqueed. It hangs in the community room at one of the facilities. Piece O'Cake produces some of her favorite designs. We hope to feature more in the next 2 weeks.
I thought that I would feature a quilt a day so you can see some of their work. Today's quilt is by Dad. We got Dali the Dog from the incredible rescue group St. Louis Senior Dog Project. Dad made this for one of their publicity and fund raising event. It features doggy vignettes with sashing and a paw print border. Enjoy!

We have 2 closets with filled quilts, so there will be a lot more gorgeous quilts coming! Stay tuned!Kruse Katshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14950732079927266134noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4250397341827268804.post-66557865593823769112013-02-13T10:04:00.002-08:002013-02-13T10:04:48.267-08:00Date PreviewParker is hoping that this will be him and CathyKeisha at nipclub, but as you know, CK ALWAYS has her way. So, here's hoping for Parker's eve!
I shudder at the thought of Parker and her doing, well, you can imagine. *shudder*

I hope you have been catching CK's stunningkeisha blog the past week. The boys collaborated with Mom to send CK cards and stuff to woo her. I am starting to think that Ken is getting cold feet, he just turned 2 after all, and CK is a wild cat woman.

This is Parker's request to CK. Enjoy the band Jet. (As if he didn't dedicate his entire Beatles set to her?)
Mom and us as flat cats were so privileged to see Tillman and his friends at BlogPaws in Salt Lake City last year. We took vids and have shown them and shown them. Even Mom's BIL who is a general cynic laughed and enjoyed the dogs.

I love the show since there is always a humanitarian aspect. We all laugh until we cry, then cry some more at touching parts.

BlogPaws is an amazing conference. You get to meet all your online friends in real time. the energy there is so high and warm and loving. You learn stuff at every turn. There is a focus on helping animals either through donations for shelters or in classes to increase your knowledge of how to reach an audience over the Internet.

I am very glad that WLTDO interviewed the BlogPaws staff. They are amazing people. I hope to see Tillman again this year. I also want mom to learn how to keep my brothers away from me. But, I guess that isn't a skill they would teach there. Well, she needs to learn how to blog in my voice better. just meowin'

Love to all!
Request your fave Beatles. anything to interrupt the daily barrage of love songs.
